Some museums are organising special activities
posted 16/05/2006 at 17:04 h.
On Thursday 18 May, Barcelona celebrates International Museum Day, and the general public is invited to visit museums in the city, free. Some of the museums are also organising special events for the day.

At the National Art Museum of Catalonia there are permanent and visiting collections, and the opening concert for the Música als Palaus is also free (places limited), with pieces by Franz Schubert.

The Joan Miró Foundation is also celebrating its 30th anniversary. There will be a party and entry will be free in the evening of 18 May, between 8 p.m. and 1 in the morning. It is also the 10th anniversary of the Museu d'Història de Catalunya, and they will celebrate with a party starting at 9 p.m.

The Museu Marítim also has a night-time event. This starts with a lantern-lit, guided tour of the permanent exhibition, then a walk to the Galera Reial, where visitors can find out first-hand what it is like to live on board a ship; as slaves for the crew for a short while.

The Museu de Ciències Naturals, has events for young people between 12 and 17 years old. "Vine al museu per conèixer-lo i dir-nos què vols" gives young people the chance to tell those running the museum what they like, and what the museum can do for them.

These are just a few examples, as International Museum Day is being celebrated at more than thirty museums and cultural centres in the city, all offering an open day. Other venues involved include CosmoCaixa, the Barbier-Mueller museum, Casa Milà, the Castell de Montjuïc, the Botanic Gardens, CaixaFòrum and the Museu Etnològic.

International Museum Day began in 1977, organised by the International Council of Museums (ICOM). The aims are to encourage society to become more involved in developing these cultural venues, bolstering recognition for museums and acting as a reminder to governments and the general public of the very special role museums play in preserving cultural heritage.
