Most performances will take place on Europe Music Day, June 21
posted 18/06/2006 at 01:00 h.
On 18, 19, 20 and 21 June Barcelona will hold its 11th Festa de la Música. This year there will be over 200 musical performances in 10 districts around the city, as well as 60 events organised by 147 organisations.

Most of the different acts and concerts will take place on 21, coinciding with Europe Music Day, which will be celebrated in over 50 cities, and encompass all kinds of music: urban music, singer-songwriters, jazz, blues, world music, classical, choral chants, chill-out, rock, hip-hop, etc.

Carles Martí, councillor for Culture, said that with this event the council wants to promote a culture of music in the city, fighting piracy and increasing the amount of live music and musical training on offer.

Chill out at Palau de la Virreina

At the Palau de la Virreina you will find books on music and about musicians. There will also be stands with representatives of well-known music magazines and associations from the world of music. Visitors will also have the chance to take part in a workshop on Catalan rumba, enjoy DJ sessions and see a collection of unpublished scores by some well-known, and not so well-known, groups.

Concerts in the Plaça Reial

The Plaça Reial will host seven hours of non-stop concerts with groups from the world of hip-hop, punk rock, PT-pop, gypsy fusion, swing, crazy jazz, blues rock and post-rock. Hip-hop fans will also have the chance to enjoy their favourite concerts at the Parc de les Tres Xemeneies.

The most popular

At Viu la Música en Viu, in the Avinguda de la Catedral, you will be able to hear really well-known performers like Pastora, Los Secretos, Checho Bengoechea, Lax'n'Busto, Lichis and Javier Ruibal, live.

Unusual musical acts

Various locations around the city will stage some really original acts. At the Mercat de la Boqueria, for example, you can see La Bandaeria; on the Rambla there will be percussionists at all the traffic lights; on Barceloneta beach you will be able to enjoy a show by Kakúa i Kantor, with a silent choir and a conductor who makes the waves sing; the Auditori will pay special homage to Cole Porter; and, at the Jardí Botànic a special open day for lovers where you will hear the most famous ballads.

The Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona will also hold an open day so people can visit the exhibition "Vinils. Discs i caràtules d'artistes".

Singer-songwriters in the libraries

Various city libraries will welcome the winners and finalists of the 10th Horta Guinardó singer-songwriter competition, who include Estopa, El Sobrino del Diablo, Pedro Javier Hermosilla, Dani Flaco, Alfonso Mora, Álex Martínez, Rafa Pons and Verd Cel.

Also on the programme is an activity for children, "Les estrelles de Mozart" (Mozart's Stars), in which the Reina de la Nit (the Night Queen) is distraught because she cannot remember which of Mozart's operas she is in. The aim of this event is to introduce children to the music of Austria's famous composer.

Also for the festival, the city libraries have produced a guide to unavailable items: a selection of CDs and demos prepared by the Vapor Vell library team who specialise in urban music and have the city's only collection of demos. The guide is available in all the city's libraries and the and at chill out in the Palau de la Virreina.
