The integrated parking regulation project in Barcelona, more commonly known as the “Green Area”, has recently been awarded the prize for the most innovative strategy for managing mobility requirements.
This prize has been awarded within the framework of the NICHES programme (New and Innovative Concepts for Helping European Transport Sustainability), set up by the European Union. The prize-giving will take place in the city of Toulouse on March 16th, 2007 during the final conference of the NICHES project.

The granting of this award recognizes the merit of this Barcelona City Council scheme to comprehensively redefine the concept of the city, integrating at the same time other complementary measures such as the creation of new parking areas for motorcycles and the regulation of loading and unloading. Recognition has also been given to the efforts made by local and regional authorities to apply new and innovative systems for improving mobility.
One of the reasons the project won the prize, according to the award jury, was the assessment of its possible application in other cities, thus creating a new trend in mobility management. In this way, the 'Green Area' can become a reference model to be followed by other cities.

Since its creation the Council has promoted the 'Green Area' with the aim of decongesting the city's traffic, and consequently, improving the citizens' quality of life and fostering a model of sustainable mobility. The 'Green Area' is a street parking regulation system that controls available parking spaces and makes them available for local residents to park their vehicles.
