»  Sokurov enters the museum

Cinema has become part of the attraction of museums and exhibition centres for some time. The Barcelona Contemporary Art Museum (MACBA) has three films by the Russian director Aleksandr Sokurov in its collection and which it is now going to show for the first time.

These are: Spiritual Voices, Confession and Soldier's Dream. They date from the mid 1990s and deal with one of the recurring themes in Sokurov's works: army life. The films have a great poetic force and were shot on the frontier between Tajikistan and Afghanistan.

The photographers Ton Sirera, Ferran Bosch and Jordi Verrié were commissioned to take snapshots of Catalonia from 1968 to 1978, the dates these books were published by the Catalunya Visió project.

An exhibition on at the Arts Santa Mònica is now showing nearly 170 photographs taken for these graphic books, which offers descriptive journeys through the Catalan counties plus Andorra, French Catalonia, and the frontier areas of Llitera, Baix Cinca and Matarranya.

Sculpture and 3D art is the main attraction in the exhibition Escultura / Objecte, which the Suñol Foundation is giving to start its fifth anniversary celebrations. This is a review of 20th-century sculpture, from the work of the avant-garde sculptors to those of the 1980s.

It features more than thirty items from the Suñol Collection, including works by such established artists as Chillida, Gargallo, Calder, Giacometti and Miró, though there will also be more recent works by artists like Pep Duran, Bill Culbert, Jaume Barrera and Tom Carr.

»  From the microscope to the Universe

David Bestué and Marc Vives have been working together for some time on a series of installations called Accions [Actions]. One of their latest works is called Accions a l'Univers [Actions in the Universe]. It is a large installation that offers us a journey from the microscopic world to the Universe.

The work, which is part of the "la Caixa" Contemporary Art Foundation's collection, takes a nod at the human body, the mind, the end of the world and 20th-century art. Now on at the Barcelona CaixaForum, it is a vehicle for the artists to put the spotlight on viewers' experiences.

»  Miró's political perspective

Direct from the London Tate Modern and before going on to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the exhibition "Joan Miró: The Ladder of Escape " highlights the artist's lifelong political commitment.

Miró's sense of Catalan identity is unquestionable, as were the links he maintained with his native land. All this is shown in the works that are now on display in this exhibition, which range from Montroig landscapes like La masia (1921-1922) which was owned by Ernest Hemingway, a friend of Miró´s, the masterly sequence Cap de pagès català (1924-1925) to the series of Ses Majestats sculptures (1974) made from rural tools.

Av Miramar, 1 - Sants-Montjuïc
» Dates: From 16/10/2011 to 18/03/2012
